Austral Books are general publishers who believe that the publishing industry has fallen largely into the hands of accountants,who confuse quality with the length of the black bottom line.

By minimizing overheads, particularly printing costs, we are able to publish quality books which would otherwise struggle to find a niche in a marketplace dominated by the sex-sensation best seller formula and the trivial-minded gilt and gossip preoccupation with the lives of 'celebrities'.

We are interested in work of real substance, expressed in language of stylistic distinction or lucid prose adapted to the subject matter.

We are not interested, except as objects of intelligent satire, in film-stars, TV personalities, popular bandwaggons, or the private peccadilloes of the ephemerally famous.

We are NOT interested in work of pseudo-profundity, in which obscurantism does service for ideas.
